Hat Designer reacts to album cover – Billboard

Janessa Leoné, the creator of the burgundy velvet hat Taylor Swift wears on the newly unveiled cover of her re-recording Red album, had no idea that she would see the pop icon in any of her tracks on the upcoming release.

“It was a total surprise to see her sport Mattie on the album cover – we were really shocked, but delighted,” said Leoné, who launched her line in 2013, said Billboard. (Billboard contacted Leoné to confirm that the cap, seen on Swift’s album cover below, was his design after spotting a tip from the very comprehensive fan-run fashion blog Taylor Swift Style.)

“I’ve known her stylist for years,” says Leoné, “but I didn’t work with his crew on this shoot – it was completely organic.”

Leoné adds: “Taylor is an icon to so many young women, so we are honored that she chose to wear a Janessa Leoné hat – and support a designer in such a huge way – on the cover of her new album.”

The designer paid Swift big compliments, saying she “shows her confidence on the cover of the new album.”

She noted that Swift had chosen to wear this hat on Red (Taylor version), the re-recorded album released on November 19, suited her perfectly, as she hopes her designs will allow people to “embrace their individuality – to be confident in themselves like an accessory you never take off”.

Swifties on mission to replicate artist’s fall loan Red (Taylor version) look might be hard pressed to find a Mattie burgundy velvet fisherman cap, as that specific style is currently out of stock and the brand has no plans for a restocking.

But fans of the look might be interested in the “new bodies and materials in the works” for their fall / winter collection, which launches in late summer or early fall. The collection will include woolen beanies in new colors, corduroy caps, water resistant hats and more.

In July, Janessa Leoné will also launch a campaign on the importance of skin care and sun protection, with a selection of UPF hats offering a high level of UV protection. In August, they will release new functional accessories for travel.
