“It was a choice that I was not necessarily happy to have made”

Selena Gomez spoke about the “unfair” treatment she received in the public eye and the impact of being sexualized at such a young age.

The Only murders in the building the star recently sat down with a colleague comedians Amy Schumer, Tracee Ellis Ross, Quinta Brunson, Molly Shannon and Bridget Everett forThe Hollywood Reporter panel discussion of comedic actresses to discuss the challenges they have faced as women in the entertainment industry.

Schumer, who stars in the Hulu television series Life and Bethtook the opportunity to congratulate the 29-year-old actress and singer for forging her own path in the industry, despite being “sexualized at such a young age”.

Calling the situation “really unfair”, Gomez went on to mention a particular moment in her singing career that made her “shame”.

“I actually did an album cover and I was really ashamed after I did it,” she told the panel. “I had to get over those feelings because I realized it had to do with something deeper that was going on. And that’s a choice I wasn’t necessarily happy I made, but I think I tried my best, at least I try to be myself.

The Rare Beauty founder explained that the album cover didn’t feel natural to her because she wasn’t “an overly sexual person.”

“Sometimes I like to feel sexy, but that doesn’t mean it’s for someone else. It can be for me,” she said.

Although she didn’t mention the name of the album cover in question, Gomez appeared nude on the cover of her 2015 album. The comebackwhen she was 24 at the time.

At the time, she shared the album announcement on Instagram. More recently, as Gomez said during the roundtable, she stays away from social media. The actor — who hasn’t been on the internet for over four years – explained how social media gives her unrealistic standards of what she should look like.

“Well, I have to be honest, I’m not continuing [social media] more,” Gomez said. “But you see all these other people [post these images] and I can’t look that way. It’s impossible. I don’t find it feasible and as soon as I’m not there, everything else becomes real.

Gomez began his career almost 20 years ago as a child actor in the children’s series Barney and his friendsbefore landing a role on the Disney Channel show the Wizards of Waverly Place. Since then, she’s become a superstar as an actress and musician, all while trying to break the Disney mould.

“I think I did a good job stepping back from this because I’m pretty honest about my imperfections,” Gomez said. “But I took control of the narrative of my life once I started to age because growing up I didn’t really have a choice.”

“Now I understand that there are certain boundaries that I have to set myself, and I respect and adore so many people, but I have to do what’s best for me,” she said.
