Jon Hopkins has announced a new album. It is called Music for psychedelic therapy and it’s November 12 (digital / CD) and February 11 (LP) via Domino. Today, Hopkins shared the album closer “Sit around the fire», A collaboration with the producer and ceremony guide Eastern Forest which features the voice of the late guru Ram Dass. Listen to it below.
Hopkins said in a statement that his album, which does not contain rhythms or drum sounds, is from a 2018 expedition to the Tayos Caves in Ecuador. “Music for psychedelic therapy is not ambient, classic or drone, but contains elements of all three, âhe said. âFor me, it’s a place as much as a sound. It works for the sober mind, but takes on a whole new dimension when introduced into a psychedelic ceremony.
“” Sit Around The Fire “exists from one of the deep synchronicities that inaugurated this [album] become, âHopkins added. âI was contacted by East Forest, who had spent time with Ram Dass in Hawaii before his death. He had access to several less heard lectures from the 1970s and asked to put them to music. He sent me some starting points, including the beautiful choral voices he recorded that opened the song. I put on my headphones and with Ram Dass’ voice in my head I sat down at the piano and improvised. What you hear is the first thing that came out, it just appeared in response to the words.
Music for psychedelic therapy is Hopkins’ first feature film since 2018 Singularity. Last year, he published another wellness-focused article titled âSinging Bowl (Ascension),â which he wrote with meditation practices in mind. The track followed another new piano composition, “Scene Suspended”, which Hopkins had made his live debut at the Sydney Opera House. He most recently released the cover EP Piano versions, a counterpart of 2014 Sleep versions.
