Next month, Jon hopkins will release his new album, Music for psychedelic therapy, released on November 12 (digital / CD) and February 11 (LP). Today he shares a great preview of the upcoming record with “Music for psychedelic therapy (excerpt)” and develops this new piece of music: “It’s time to share the music that is at the heart of this album. This is what it is for me. Everything on the record is so intrinsically linked that rather than ripping one track and releasing it afterwards, I did this standalone single, which is taken from two great moments from the second half – “Love Flows Over Us In Prismatic Waves” and ‘Deep in the shining heart’.
The accompanying visualizer was created by longtime Hopkins collaborator Stephen McNally, whom Hopkins describes as “Only able to transform the images I have in my head into things that everyone can see. ”
Music for psychedelic therapy is Hopkins’ first feature film since his sister albums, the Grammy nominated Singularity (2018) and Immunity (2013). For this collection, Hopkins wanted to do something that faced the opposite direction, something egoless and introspective, done with total and raw honesty.
The result is “An album without beats, not a single drum sound, something more akin to a classical symphony than a dance / electronica record. Something more like an experience than listening to a piece of music. It’s not ambient, classic, or drone but has elements of all three. . . it is a place as much as a sound. It works for the sober mind, but takes on a whole new dimension when introduced into a psychedelic ceremony ”, Hopkins adds. “Like everyone else, I’ve been through a lot of intensely heavy stuff over the past year or so. Somehow this music has passed through me in that time, shining like a constant light in this winter. Honestly, I have no idea where this came from – the whole creation process was in a sort of trance. I remember going to the studio every day, barely seeing anyone and ‘having continued until late at night, I felt pushed by a force far beyond myself and it was unforgettable.
