Clarkson said that although she initially struggled to talk about her feelings during the divorce process, writing new material for her tenth studio album while navigating new, uncharted waters has allowed her to heal.

“It’s an important album. I’m working on it in therapy: sometimes I have a hard time expressing how I feel, so the music helps me. It’s just been really healing,” Clarkson said. Variety in a recent cover interview.

She continued, “When my ex and I first broke up, there were a lot of emotions. It was tough. I hadn’t really worked hard on an album until I got it. I was just really busy. There were so many jobs, and I’m a single mom – well, even being married is a lot, trying to fit in with the kids’ schedules and all that But then the whole divorce thing happened, and I needed to write it down.

“My producer and I were laughing yesterday because I was like, ‘Remember that time we wrote, like, 25 songs in a week?’ A lot of them are the ones on the album. I literally wrote most of them almost two years ago,” she added of writing the songs for the album. album.” Then I said to my label, ‘I can’t talk about it until I’ve been through it,’ and it just took a while to do it. That’s one of the reasons we’ve been doing a lot of Christmas stuff the last two years – because I was like, “Well, that’s happy!”

Clarkson and Blackstock, who share daughter River Rose, 8, and son Remington, 6, wed in October 2013. Clarkson filed for divorce from the talent manager in June 2020, citing “irreconcilable differences”.

Their divorce was finalized in March 2021. And while the project offered Clarkson a space to openly share her feelings, she says she wasn’t sure whether or not she would release him “because you can be very angry in this state of mind”. .”

“Some of the songs, they definitely run the gamut of emotions; it’s all on the album,” Clarkson explained of the as-yet-untitled release, which will follow 2017. The meaning of life. “It’s almost like the arc of a relationship because the beginning is so beautiful and so sweet, and then it evolves. And sometimes it doesn’t evolve the way you want it to.

Over the summer, Clarkson took time off from her work schedule to refocus and continue working on the project. She has spent time away from her many roles, including that of judge on The voice and accommodation American song contest and his morning talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show.

“I like to be busy in general. But especially when all the feelings are happening, I’m like, ‘Oh, let’s be as busy as possible, so I don’t have to feel like this for a minute!’ I’m doing this, which isn’t healthy. I was like, ‘I just need to keep swimming like Dory, and then I’ll get there.’ That’s why taking this summer was so important to me, even though a lot of people were a little disappointed because I was supposed to do a few things. Obviously I quit The voice this season because I just needed space.

Once her highly anticipated album is released, Clarkson will keep busy with a planned tour around her project.

“I will definitely be doing shows. We seek to understand,” Clarkson said. “I sing almost every day because of the show, even if it’s always other people’s music. So I feel like I checked that box. But when you’re writing an album that’s so personal, it’s just therapeutic to be able to get up there.

Additionally, Clarkson will join Dolly Parton on a reimagined version of Parton’s iconic hit, “9 to 5,” which will be released on Friday, September 9.

“I’m so excited to finally announce that the new version of ‘9 to 5’ that I recorded with the legendary @dollyparton is out September 9th!! Thank you, @shanemcanally, for making this dream come true and for putting this project together,” Clarkson wrote.

Recorded in New York, The Kelly Clarkson Show returns to NBC for Season 4, which airs September 12.
