Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die album cover was taken at Watford

All my life has been a lie

When Lana Del Rey released her debut album Born To Die in 2012, she was selling the American dream to the world. The record was a soaring mix of hip hop beats, vintage orchestras, film noir and sleazy Hollywood glamor and the entire LP beamed with stars and stripes.

Fast forward to 2021 and we get a plot twist. It has come to the internet’s attention that much of this Americana was created at… Watford.

After the above tweet started gaining traction, it piqued the interest of a TikTokker who decided he needed to head to Watford and investigate whether the iconic images really came from the city – far to be the typical location for a major label artist. photos from the first photo album.

Kieran Armitage tracked down the bungalow and did a side-by-side comparison with the house and photo on his phone and proved the tweet to be true – and even got a glimpse through the window of retro furniture that matched another photo of Lana inside.

Nobody was home when Kieran tried to ring the doorbell, but luckily for the fans, he returned home to try again, which resulted in a second part that revealed even more information:

This time Kieran was able to speak to the owner of the house who showed him the vintage green truck that Lana poses with in the shoot still in his garage today, and showed him the exact times Lana was standing in 2011.

On top of that, the owner gave her Lana Del Rey’s retro sunglasses, now broken in half, as a keepsake. She also revealed that Lana would have played for the whole crew.

Before Lana’s breakthrough success, Video Games, exploded, she had directed several music videos on YouTube, including those for Video Games, Born To Die and Blue Jeans. All of these future singles from the Born To Die era received new big-budget music videos after Del Rey’s skyrocketing fame, but the original versions are still available online. The home owner shared that Lana shot scenes for the original Blue Jeans video outside the Watford home and inside her truck.

In a third part that delves into Lana’s creative vision for the cover, Kieran expresses her wish that the owner of the house be treated with respect if other fans also want to make the pilgrimage to the bungalow and that people don’t harass her and don’t respect it. his private life.

Ok, but… why the hell was Lana Del Rey at Watford?

Well, that’s the mystery. Nobody really knows. She moved in with her then-manager Ben Mawson in London in 2010 after the release of her record Lana Del Ray AKA Lizzy Grant – an album which was pulled from stores once she signed with a major label to release Born To Die as his first big debut. LP. Lana Del Rey said she then lived in London for a few years and the photographer she worked with on set, Nicole Nodland, is based in London. There’s a gallery of photos Nodland took of Lana at Watford on Lana’s Wiki.

Born To Die is an era-defining album that was the coming-of-age record for so many of our generation and truly ushered in a new era of female alternative pop, like Lorde and Billie Eilish. To speak as a huge Lana Del Rey fan, to be from the UK, and to hear that the cover of an album important to you and so many of your peers was taken here is oddly moving – and makes you feel a bit closer to an artist whose talent and iconography usually feel miles away.

But, still… WATFORD!?
