Pete Townshend Doubts There’s Another Who Album E! News UK

Pete Townshend isn’t sure there will be another The Who album because of the “old-fashioned way they work”.

The 76-year-old guitarist admitted he had doubts whether iconic band ‘My Generation’ would ever reunite to work on a follow-up to 2019 album ‘Who’.

He told Guitar Player magazine: “When it comes to a new record, it takes a lot of time to put together the 20 or 30 songs needed at a time by Roger [Daltrey] and me and any producer we might work with to select those that fit the times.

“Because you write the songs, then two years later you release them all, and you just hope you’re going to be in the mood for the moment.

“A lot of artists now write songs at home, record them at home, and release them within weeks.

“But our process is old fashioned, and it takes a long time. So I don’t know, but I’m optimistic. And I’m certainly full of ideas.”

And Pete admitted that he and Roger have slightly different stances on pushing the envelope at this point in their careers.

He explained: “I think Roger doesn’t want to sell vague or evolving, unfinished ideas.

“But I’m still at a place now where I want to play and take risks as a songwriter and studio writer.”

Another potential stumbling block is the idea of hitting the road, with Pete suggesting he might not want to “tour like we’ve been doing for the past few years”.

He added: “It could be tricky. And I think that’s partly because we’re getting older, and partly because this lockdown has left us a bit restless.

“I think Roger just wants to come out and use his voice. And so I feel like what he’s going to want to do is play catch-up with the tour, which we did after taking a really long sabbatical from The Who from late 1982 until about 1996.

“But I don’t know how ready I will be to tour like we have for the past few years, although I find it easy and interesting.”
