In the race for the 3rd District House, outgoing GOP Representative Adrian Smith de Gering is officially opposed by Democrat Mark Elworth Jr. of Omaha and libertarian Dustin Hobbs of Grand Island.
Voters in the 11th Judicial District will be asked whether to select three local judges: District Judge Richard Birch of North Platte and County Judges Kent Turnbull of North Platte and Ed Steenburg of Ogallala.
Lincoln County does not have a legislative race this year, but State Senator Tom Brewer of Gordon is opposed to Tanya Storer of rural Whitman for re-election in Sandhills-dominated District 43.
Senator Steve Erdman of Bayard is unopposed for a second term in District 47, which includes Keith County and much of the Panhandle.
Amendments and initiatives
Voters in Nebraska will consider two constitutional amendments put on the ballot by the legislature and a quartet of election initiatives that received enough valid petition signatures.
One of the amendments approved by the unicameral would declare “involuntary slavery or servitude” illegal without any exceptions. Voters will be urged to remove the 1875 language allowing slavery as a punishment for conviction of a felony.
The other amendment would expand the availability of tax increase funding. If more than half of the land in a TIF project is found to be “extremely deteriorated”, redevelopers could recoup the costs eligible for the TIF by increasing its assessed value over a period of up to 20 years.
